Geocache Description:

It's time for an Old Silo series - the Northern Tour!

This is Old Silo #4

We have loved doing the Old Silo Series by Mister Greenthumb and Sunshine. Ever since our first Old Silo cache, we have seen "old silo" after "old silo". How come we never noticed them before.

We have finally realized that it is time for an Old Silo series up our way. So enjoy these picturesque "old silos" and the Northern Tour! Growing up on a farm, I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated each old silo. There have been many memories of days gone by.

As you find these caches, please post pictures!

And of course, borrowed from the original "Old Silo" caches:

Silo facts: The word silo means "cellar". Before silos corn was stored
underground in cellars.

Silo facts: One of the reasons for the building of silos in Wisconsin, was to store corn to feed cows over the winter months. Before a farm had a silo, many farmers sold their cow herds in fall and then re-bought the cows in spring. It was too costly to buy the feed during the winter.

Silo Fact: Why are all the silos the same general shape, width and height? It was determined in the 1920's that anything taller or wider would result in too much loss of grain due to mold.

Silo Fact: In 1923 there were 100,000 silos in Wisconsin
the most of any state. New York was in second place with only 54,000
