Yoshimi-Hyakuana is composed of hundreds of ancient tomb dugs into the side of a hill. These were made between late 6th century and late 7th century.. It was designated as a historical site at 1923.Though ancient tomb dug into the side of a hill is made by drilling slope, its main construction is similar to that of stone hut. Yoshimi-Hyakuana whole area is covered by tuffaceous sandstone. Tuffaceous sandstone is easy to dig. That is the reason why ancient tomb dugs into the side of a hill exist here. In 1870s and 1880s, excavation was carried out but the results are some excavated article only. The number of ancient tomb dugs is 219.

吉見百穴は古墳時代の末期（６世紀末～７世紀末）に造られた横穴墓で、大正１２年に国の史跡に指定された。横穴墓は丘陵や台地の斜面を掘削して墓としたものであるが、死者が埋葬された主体部の構造は古墳時代後期の横穴式石室とほとんど同じである。百穴が分布する一帯は凝灰質砂岩と呼ばれる比較的掘削に適した岩盤が広がっており、当時の人々は掘削するのに適した場所を探して横穴墓を造ったと考えられる。吉見百穴は明治２０年に発掘調査が実施されているが、わずかな写真と出土品を残すのみで詳細な情報はほとんど残っていない。現在確認できる横穴の数は２１９基である。
