Geocache Description:

This was going to be created to celebrate finding our 200th cache... after some serious procrastination and 350 caches later we did it!

People who don't procrastinate can create incredible things... like the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park.

The natural ecosystems of Hamilton City in the northern North Island of New Zealand have almost been completely destroyed, with only 1.6 % of its original native vegetation cover now remaining. Many ecological restoration projects are underway across the city to repair remnant ecosystems but Hamilton City is also home to a very special ecological reconstruction project at the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park (WNHP).

WNHP encompasses 60 hectares of council-owned land, including Horseshoe Lake, in north-western Hamilton. The project is considered to be an ecological reconstruction because the area was deforested, drained, and converted to agricultural pasture 150 years ago and thus, provided no native elements to restore when it was land-banked in the late 1990’s. An ecological reconstruction project was proposed because the varied topography and soil types of the area provide an opportunity to recreate the full range of historic local ecosystems. The project began in 2004 with support from the Hamilton City Council, University of Waikato, Waikato Institute of Technology, local iwi groups, Tui 2000 and many members of the public.

The WHNP ecological reconstruction plan is underpinned by practical experience, local knowledge and ecological theory. It has been set up as a long term experiment to understand the practical aspects of bringing indigenous nature back into the city and aims to produce robust ecological reconstruction guidelines that are applicable throughout New Zealand and across the world.

All of the plants you see have been planted by people who share a vision to recreate a forest that they themselves will never see but that their great grandchildren will enjoy. For more info please see: (visit link)
