The cache is located on an old railroad bed now known as the Wiouwash trail between the villages of Birnamwood and Eland. The Wiouwash gets its’ name from the 4 counties that it crosses, Winnebago, Outagamie, Waupaca and Shawano. This is a nice trail to hike, bike or ride a horse on in the summer months and snowmobile on in the winter. There is a small creek that crosses the trail in various spots as you get closer to Eland and it is known to contain brook trout. The trail intersects with the Mountain Bay trail in Eland. Bike riders need to have a Wisconsin State Trails pass. The cost is $20 for a season pass and $4.00 for a daily pass. Daily passes can be purchased at the trail head where parking is available in Birnamwood at N 44 55.712 W089 12.470. There is also an ice cream shop that is open during the summer months and a large chicken sign along the highway in Birnamwood advertising a restaurant that has excellent broasted chicken!
Container is not your typical find. It is a matchstick container that is embedded in another object. Please be careful when opening the container. The bottom unscrews and the matchstick container has a log and a small pencil. I suggest that you bring along a writing utensil just in case the original pencil goes missing. Permission to place the cache was granted by Keith Marquardt, Shawano County Parks Department Manager.
