Geocache Description:

This is another in our bead trade series, are you ready for more hisotry of beads?

The era of the Arts & Crafts movement and Art Nouveau style ended in 1914 and World War I virtually halted jewelry production for four years. Clientele for jewelry shifted from wealthy segments of population to emerging middle class. A taste for luxury items again developed among the elite, but it was modified somewhat by the increasingly influential middle class, whose limited resources and restrained attitude toward flamboyance established the standards of clothes and jewelry. In 1920, trying to meet the demands of the rapidly growing middle-class clientele, who requested low-to medium priced jewelry, both old and new materials and techniques were employed. Costume jewelers could afford to take risks and use bold shapes and colors. Great glass beads of great originality were made while some Czech glass beads imitated precious stones, including ruby, carnelian, and turquoise, many were highly artistic creations in their own right. Beads such as pearls were being mass produced making it affordable for women who were not wealthy to afford to wear pearl jewelry.

Congrats to wolf11469 for yet ANOTHER FTF!
