Geocache Description:

Ein cache ved vegen rundt Kjøsahammaren.

Norsk:

The "half tunnel".
Postvegruta gjekk då over Kjøsahalsen, fjellryggen rett over der tunnelen går i dag. I 1838 starta arbeidet med ny veg over Kjøsahalsen. Vegen vart ikkje fullførd før i 1854.

Cachen ligg ikkje vanskeleg plassert.

Kjøsahammaren (The Kjøs cliff) has always been a challenge for land communications from north to south, between Grodås and Kjøs. "Den trondhjemske Postvei" (The Trondheim Postal Route) through Hornindal was completed around 1795. The route went over Kjøsahalsen, the ridge above where the tunnel is today. Construction of a new and improved road over Kjøsahalsen was started in 1838. That road was not completed until 1854. The road along the lake shore, on the outside of Kjøsahammaren, was opened in 1904. The steep cliffs led to the construction of a so-called "half tunnel" on some parts of the road. These parts were prone to falling debris, especially ice in the winter. In 1924 there was a fatal accident where ice had fallen into the road just as a local horse driver came by. They hit the ice and was thrown into the lake and drowned.

In 1968 an 813 m long tunnel was built through Kjøsahammaren. In the fall of 2012 the road from Grodås to Kjøs will become an international E-road. As a result of this and the possibility for a new E-road through Stryn municipality, a new tunnel might be built between Grodås and Kjøs (or Øyebakken, further east). Time will tell.

The road around Kjøsahammaren can still be subject to falling debris, so be careful. It is not advised to walk here in the winter time or during extreme rain.

The recommended approach is from the parking at the north end of the tunnel. This is the shortest way and has less danger of falling rocks. To get to the cache from the south there is among other things a big pile of fallen rocks that needs to be climbed over. But if the conditions are good it is definitely very nice to walk the whole distance between the tunnel openings.

NB: The terrain rating is because of the danger of falling debris. The cache is not difficult to reach.
