Time Stood "Still" - A rigorous, yet rewarding, hike around horse-shoe shaped Bruce Lake in the Harrison Hills. We "still" wonder what went on out here, way back in "time"...
The FINAL cache is not located at the listed coordinates. Begin at the PARKING AREA and where the First Stage is found. This adventure may be a bit of work to complete, but we think it is "still" well worth it. Be sure to record the above coordinates, so you get back to your vehicle at the starting point. Allow enough time for a long, strenuous and fun hike; bring water and maybe a picnic or snack while you enjoy the many photo opportunities while hiking around this scenic area.
Mark introduced Lani to the Harrison Hills back in the early 80's. We still enjoy every opportunity to drive here, whether to hike, ATV, snowmobile, camp, hunt, fish, or photograph the area, which is especially stunning in the Fall. Sources say back in the day "certain gangsters" got their moonshine from this very area (thus the "still" in the name).
The best route in is from the WEST by taking Grundy Road to Cranefoot Lake Road to Beaver Trail Road. You may park your geomobile near the listed coordinates, but please don't block the path between the two big boulders, which is the boat launch/access to the lake.
We want you to enjoy this area, so we created a "hiking tour" around the horseshoe-shaped Bruce Lake. There are SIX Stages total, which can only be found in order, one after the other. Each of five small caches contains the coordinates to the next cache, the FINAL being an ammo box loaded with SWAG, a LOG BOOK, 3 Travel Bugs, and a dollar coin for the First To Find.
Begin your search with Stage 1. You will find a card/tag in each cache with coordinates to the next cache. Write down or record the coordinates, then RETURN THE CARD/TAG back into the cache for the next person to find!
First find Stage 1/Cache 1, which has the coordinates to Stage2/Cache 2. Stage 2/Cache 2 will have the coordinates to Stage 3/Cache 3. Continue to Stage 4/Cache 4, etc., etc., to the FINAL CACHE.
After you find the FINAL and sign the LOG BOOK, there are two ways back: the short way or the long way.
The Short Way: You may continue on, heading the same direction you've been going on this hiking tour, which has similar terrain, and lead back to the starting point/Stage 1/Parking Area.
OR The LONG Way: turn around and re-trace your steps back through all 5 Stages, to the starting point/Stage 1/Parking Area. It's your choice.
;-)
Original contents: a dollar coin for FTF, a CITO bag, a bottle of water, a large twig pencil, a green caribiner/compass, an old Hutch soda bottle, and an old train spike from Mark's personal collection, a coupon for breakfast, a deck of playing cards from a Minnesota casino, an antennae ball, a camo egg, a workout guest pass (thx WCD!), and 3 Travel Bugs: Wolfboy the Legend, Norwegian GeoCoin, and Hoot's Journey.
We used two navigation units to average the coordinates. Let us know if our coordinates are accurate or way off, and by how much. We had a blast scouting and setting up this multi-cache in Harrison Hills and we hope you do, too! In April we saw Wintergreen plants blanketing the woods; Mark says the red berries are edible. Also, from spring to fall, be sure to check each other for wood ticks!
Thanks, and happy caching. We can't wait to read your logs!!!
