The Star of India
Please note this is a mystery cache and NOT at the posted co-ordinates, although there is a plaque there with information about the ship.
The Star of India is the world's oldest active sailing ship. She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey Shipyard in the Isle of Man in 1863. Iron ships were experiments of sorts then, with most vessels still being built of wood. Within five months of laying her keel, the ship was launched into her element. She bore the name Euterpe (pronounced You-terp-ee), after the Greek muse of music and poetry.
She is the world’s oldest sailing ship that still puts to sea. She has had mixed fortunes in her long history and has circumnavigated the earth 21 times, but now enjoys a quiet life as a floating museum in San Diego, California.
The above coordinates will take you to a plaque commemorating the ship and is only a reference point for the actual cache.
To obtain the true co-ordinates you need to go 'Stargazing' here at GC1B5YK.
You can either travel in person to San Diego or obtain the help of fellow geocachers across the sea. They too may be seeking a similar cache in California. To help them you will also need to go 'Stargazing' here at GC3F9EG
Post a note on the cache page here at GC3H1G2 requesting an exchange of information. Contact with other geocachers should be done through geocaching.com messaging.
Please do NOT write any co-ordinates in your log, this would spoil the fun for others.
As San Diego has more cachers than the Isle of Man, Manx cachers should feel free to divulge the co-ordinates of the San Diego cache to more than one cacher if they wish.
