West Tanpit Wood is a small, quiet woodland located on the banks of picturesque Markham Brook. It is probably named because of the brook having been previously used for leather tanning. Oak was used to line tan pits into which brook water was fed, the oak bark leeched out tannins causing the animal hides to soften and become more durable.
Thank you to the Forestry Commission for giving us permission to place this geocache.
