Geocache Description:

Nano BYOP cache near the Main Post Office building.

Building of Saint-Petersburg post office was erected in the second half of XVIIIth century by architect N.A.Lvov. At first the building was used as auxiliary. Ground floor of the building was used for stables for more than 100 horses, which were the main transport of that time, while first and second floors were inhabited by employees of the Post Post operations began on the 22th of September, 1785. In 1801-1803 the Main Post office of Saint-Petersburg was moved here. In 1902-1904 the building was widely reconstructed and the new big hall with glass roof established instead of open courtyard. Latest reconstruction of the building was in 2004, when original look was returned to its main hall and facade. Since 1785 till 1918 the St. Petersburg Main post office was the mileage origin for all the roads of Russian Empire. Granite zero kilometer sign was restored in 2002.
