a bit of a history cache.
you are looking for a small lunchbox.
photographs would be nice but not necessary.
watch out for muggles as this can be a busy place in nice weather.
gz is wheelchair accessible but may need help with final retrieval.
HISTORY
the building which the cache is next to is an old mortuary, it served the underhill community for many years and was purposely placed here for close proximity to the adjacent graveyard.
this morgue mainly dealt with the dead who were found to be washed up on chesil beach and nearly all of the people who are buried there are "strangers" as in they were unknown to people on the island. there are a few gravestones with no names on as usually the only way to identify people was to check anything they had on them or to liaise with those who had lost crew members at sea.
the morgue is now a store for the equipment used to maintain the park and tours of the inside are available if you talk to the groundskeepers. i have been inside and it was very eerie. there is even the original white porcelain sink in there which was used to wash utensils and the hands of the morgue workers. it was opened as part of the local b-side festival.
nearby across the road is the officers field olympic village, it will house the majority of the olympians and paralympians during the olympic sailing events, there are 71 houses all of which will be sold after the games. there are also plans to convert the offices into a school and the playing field will be open to the public once the games is over. the officers fields themselves were the playing fields for the officers in the royal navy but once they left the dockyard they left the ground to the residents of portland, now it will be the location of the olympic sailing village and future officers fields housing estate.
the morgue sits in victoria gardens, a local public gardens with lawn bowles a park and tennis facilities, the portlandlads have many memories of playing here as kids. the park itself was originally just fields but was converted to a public garden which opened in the early 1900s. back then it sported a bandstand which stood where the tennis courts are now.
places to visit while you are here: the d day memorial which is west of the gz, the olympic village (once its open to the public in late 2012), portland castle, the olympic venue and of course the fantastic chesil beach and its nearby caches.
thanks for taking the time to visit my cache.
