Yes there is an old outhouse smack in the middle of the woods. It was probably part of an old homestead at one time. The cache is NOT in the outhouse. It is not a working building.
Shaw Nature Reserve is a 2500 acre reserve featuring tall grass prairie, wetlands, oak/hickory woods and river bottom. It is part of the Missouri Botanical Garden. It is open year round, dusk to dawn. Admission is free to MoBot members, $3 for seniors, $5 for adults and free to children under 12. The paved loop road is open dusk to dawn year round. the gravel loop road is open April through November, weekdays.
Permission and information obtained from Lydia Toth.
The final container is now in place (3/31/12). Open carefully
The trail to this cache can be via the River Trail or the Barn Road.
There used to be an old barn on that site (hence the name Barn Road) and it was used for a variety of programs. During the Depression there was a “youth at risk” program that operated out of there…kids came out and spent the night(s) and used the outhouse. Later on, Edgar Anderson used to bring botany students out from Washington University and they stayed in the barn as they conducted their botanical studies. I’m not sure when the barn came down but the outhouse still remains.
Thanks to LFrank for great container. Large enough for lots of goodies.
