I have been to a few talks in Canastota about the history of the canal. They said between New York and Buffalo there were 5000 boats working on the canal at one time in the 1880's. It was a wild, rough, noisy and busy path with boats and mules and people heading in both directions. Most likely you could see a boat moving along the canal at all times. It was a different era in our history.
