This cache has been archived.

bob8bear: Since it may be a few more weeks until we are up that way, and knowing that the Reviewer doesn't like to have a cache disabled for more than a few weeks, we will just let it go. Thanks for visiting this cemetery along the Santa Fe Trail. Good Bye!

Geocache Description:

The cache is located just outside of the Santa Clara Cemetery so please be respectful of the area. Stealth mode is always appropriate.

We could not find any information as to why there are two cemeteries located next to each other in Wagon Mound. If you have additional information, please drop us a note as we are anxious to include the additional information on this cache page.

The community of Wagon Mound began as a locality along the Santa Fe Trail. After 1836 it was a Mexican customs post. Los Cuernos, “the horns”, was mentioned as an early name for Wagon Mound, possibly because of the association with Las Mesas del Canjelon, “mesas of the deer antler”, which is to the East.

The first settlement here was called Santa Clara, because of the association with Santa Clara Spring, an important water source on Santa Clara Hill just to the northwest. Several buildings in Wagon Mound still preserve the Santa Clara name. When the post office was established in 1881, the community was briefly called Pinkerton because detectives with the Pinkerton detective agency set up shop here guarding railroad equipment. But the name was soon changed to Wagon Mound, because the butte just to the east strongly resembled a covered wagon. It is unknown how long the name Wagon Mound has been used, but it likely dates from the early days of the Santa Fe Trail.
