Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans are one of the most popular sweets in the wizarding world. They are the same as Muggle jelly beans, except the range encompasses every flavour imaginable. There is also no way of telling for sure what flavour any given bean is without tasting it, although you can try and guess by the colour.
The inventor of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans was Bertie Bott, who created them by mistake. He was planning on making tasty sweets from food, but accidentally made one taste like a dirty sock. He immediately recognised the sales potential of "a risk with every mouthful!"
There are ordinary flavours like chocolate, peppermint, and marmalade, but also less fanciable ones like spinach, liver, and tripe. There are also flavours that are not actual foods, like grass, farm dirt, vomit, earwax, paper and bogeys.
Ron Weasley is the first to warn young Harry Potter about these beans.
"You want to be careful with those," Ron warned Harry before picking up a green bean, looking at it carefully, and biting into a corner. "Bleaaargh - see? Sprouts. You want to be careful with these. When they say every flavour, they mean every flavour - you know you get all the ordinary ones like chocolate and peppermint and marmalade, but then you can get spinach and liver and tripe. George reckons he had a bogey-flavoured one once."
Later, when Harry Potter is in the hospital wing of Hogwart’s, he offered one of these beans to the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore.
"Ah! Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans! I was most unfortunate in my youth to come across a vomit-flavored one. And since then, I'm afraid I've lost my liking for them. But I think I could be safe with a nice toffee... Hum! Alas! Earwax."
Now, as you all probably know, Professor Dumbledore is a very wise and experienced wizard, but he has never forgotten his earliest encounter with these beans. He has devoted much of his time to trying to determine what flavour each bean has before actually eating it. But, he just hasn’t been able to work it out.
Perhaps you can help him…
Professor Dumbledore has a very special device called a pensieve, which he looks into to help him unravel conundrums such as this. He has managed to find a jumble of letters in a swirling mass of smoking liquid. He knows that forty nine different flavours are hidden in there, but what are all the other letters about?
If you try very hard, you will find the flavours, hidden vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The remaining letters should be read left to right, top to bottom. Every second letter will give you the location of the cache.
Oops, discovered a couple of glitches in the listing, and have been frantically trying to get it corrected for you FTF fanatics. All fixed now, I hope...And many thanks to richlink for their help with this one.
The alternating letters will also give you a message telling you where you might go to find more clues about these beans, or at least guide you in the right direction…
I hope you will be able to help our wizarding friends – after all, who wants to get a vomit flavoured jelly bean when you you would much prefer something much sweeter? Or would you??
FTF Congratulations wileyclan
