Geocache Description:

Cache surrounded by a circle

This is a series of 19 puzzle caches in the shape of a question mark on the map of Burgess Hill. All hides are within (or on the very edge of) the urban area of Burgess Hill, but I have tried to keep them away from places overlooked by buildings.

The published location is in the middle of a circle. The cache is also in the middle of a different "virtual" circle. Going to the published co-ordinates will not help you solve the puzzle, but it is not that far from the cache.

In order to find this cache you need to use the six reference points, (well at least 3 of them), attached to this cache listing. Each of these reference points are exactly the same distance from the cache, so they all form a perfect circle around the cache.

Strictly speaking that's all the information you need to find the cache. You could use geometry and the equation of a circle to calculate the exact location of the cache, (That is how I calculated the reference points), but there is a more "practical" way to home in on the cache location, especially if, like mine, your GPS can show you the distance to the 6 nearest waypoints simultaneously, geddit?

In order to calculate the reference points I assumed that in the area of the cache 1 minute of latitude is 1.853km and 1 minute of longitude is 1.168km. I assumed that over the small area's we are dealing with the lines of lattitude and longitude were perpendicular to each other. In other words, I assumed the world is flat. Actually the whole point of hiding this cache was to be able to write that in the description :o)
