This viewpoint overlooks one of the most beautiful buildings in Honolulu, one that greets commuters from the Windward side and Nuuanu daily. However, this building is also one of the most neglected and endangered.
Built in 1966, the Sanju Pagoda in the Kyoto Gardens of Honolulu Memorial Park (not to be confused with its better-known and larger neighbor Nuuanu Memorial Park, also visible) is one of the finest examples of Japanese architecture outside Japan. The pagoda is a 150% size replica of the Minami Hokke-ji pagoda in Nara, Japan, but constructed with concrete. It stands 116 feet from base to top of spire. Near the pagoda but out of sight from the viewpoint is a replica of Kyoto's Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). Both buildings are used as columbaria (holding cremated remains).
The memorial park fell into financial troubles and filed for bankruptcy in 2001. As a result, the pagoda has fallen into disrepair. Concerned plot owners saved the pagoda from demolition, and it was placed, along with the nearby buildings, on the National Register of Historic Places. Time will tell whether enough funds will be raised for the pagoda's restoration, or whether it will continue to crumble. Bottom line: Enjoy this view while it lasts.
There is a large geological feature close by, so expect more GPS variation than normal.
Congrats to MentalBill for the FTF!
