This is an easy road side cache situated at yet another national monument in the Eastern Free State.
At the beginning of the 1900’s there was a serious need between the Presbyterians in Bethlehem to have their own church. Around 1907 Mr. J Fernie asked rev. Geo Howe, railway minister in the Free State, to hold a service in the town. As a result of this and the diligence of Mr. Fernie the congregation was started in 1909. On 13 February 1910 the first service was held in the old magistrate.
During 1911 negotiations to build a church started, whilst a house was rented as a parsonage. Within a month R920 for the church building fund was gathered. Mr. J Strapp layed the cornerstone of the new church on June 11 1913. With permission from the municipality, the town hall was used for services while the church was being built. Rev. James McRobert from Port Elizabeth initiated the new church on 28 September 1913. The next day various donations were received, which included a chair for the pulpit, communion tablecloths- and tables and a baptismal font. Mr. J Strapp donated the steel ceiling.
On 24 January 1917 a hard felt blow hit the congregation when Mr. J Strapp passed away. Later the same year a memorial tablet in remembrance to him was put up.
