This Cache WAS Originally Part Of The 2012 Wicomico Geocache Dash

For eight decades after William Penn was given the colony of Pennsylvania there was an ongoing struggle with Maryland Proprietor Lord Baltimore over the boundary between the two states. Included in Penn's holdings were the three lower counties of Delaware, and finding the southern boundary was imperative in order to end the dispute. Finally the team of English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon were called in to make the final decision. Mason and Dixon began their task at what is known as midway or middle point of the east-west, Transpeninsular, 69-mile, bay-to-sea line. They headed north, establishing the Tangent Line between Maryland and Delaware. Then they began defining Pennsylvania's southern boundaries. The Transpeninsular Line had been established by earlier surveyors, who set a small stone at the Mardela site, bearing the coat of arms of the Calvert and Penn families. The famous, larger midpoint stone, bearing crowned coronets of the feuding families, and set by Mason and Dixon is at the same location.
