Geocache Description:

Spring Lake Fire Department has a garden containing two distinct, but related memorials.

As you view the garden, the memorial on the right is dedicated to all of the fallen SLFD members, may they never be forgotten.

On the left however, you may notice we are proudly displaying a large piece of steel, and you may wonder why...

Early in 2011, the Spring Lake Fire Department was granted permission from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to obtain a piece of steel from the World Trade Center remains. This was specifically for the purposes of creating a memorial, accessible to the public 24x7.

Throughout the summer of 2011, many of our members put in countless hours to help construct this addition to our memorial garden; and in a public ceremony on 9/11/11, the new monument was unveiled.

While you gaze upon this rusty piece of steel and think about bumping up your geocaching 'found' count by 1, this steel reflects the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on this infamous day and the thousands of civilians who left vacant places in family circles. Every year this steel will continue to rust and many people's memories of this day will fade, but "SLFD remembers..."

Rules:
  1. This cache area is illuminated throughout the night, so it can be accessible 24x7 but we ask is that you please DO NOT GO INTO THE GARDEN, it is not necessary to obtain the cache.
  2. Please park in designated spots, we cannot predict when our trucks will be called upon, so (obviously) it is crucial they can always get out.
  3. The membership is aware the cache exists and we welcome visitors to our station and the memorial, please don't feel uncomfortable. If someone is there, and questions you, but you feel uncomfortable, feel free to tell them you're just "visiting the memorial".

Notes:
  • Please visit our archived website dedicated to this memorial for more information.
  • Feel free to share your pictures and your memories of the 9/11 events with us.
  • For those from out of town, access to the firehouse is made directly from Lucas Avenue (not Maxwell Lane).
