In 1979 forestry worker Robert Taylor was checking some trees (or looking for stray farm animals, depending on which report you read) near Dechmont Law on the edge of the new town of Livingston. When he entered a clearing, he saw a large spherical craft with a rim like a Sombrero. As he was watching, two spheres with spikes like sea mines came from the craft and grabbed him by the legs. He remembered an acrid smell before he fell to the ground. Some time later Mr Taylor regained consciousness and made his way home where his wife called the police and the doctor. He was treated for minor injuries and the police investigated the matter as a case of assault. Some marks were found in the ground as if made by heavy machinery. However, no explanation could be found to explain Robert Taylor’s story.
More information can be found on Wikipedia, including a link to a video in which Robert Taylor was interviewed for the TV series “Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World”. I have added the coordinates of a pillar which marks the location of the clearing. There was originally a metal plaque, but unfortunately, that was stolen. However, the stone plinth is still there and is a useful aid to navigation as it is the closest point to the cache before leaving the path. This cache could be visited on a circular walk, as there is a tunnel under the M8 to the east and a foot-bridge to the west.
Update December 2018 - The plaque has been replaced and there are new noticeboards to direct you on the UFO walk.
