Geocache Description:

Another stunning piece of engineering enabling the west coast main line to cross the narrow but surprisingly deep valley of Flodder Beck.

We're not particularly train enthusiasts, but these viaducts always make an impressive sight. This one is tucked away up a side valley, visible heading towards Kendal on the A685. Easily accessed by turning off for Little Docker, with parking 50m N of the viaduct.

The viaduct is surprisingly tall and has a six-arch span.  The railway builders must have been slightly depressed when surveying the route and realising that they would have to build a large viaduct to cross the deep cut of Flodder Beck.  It's by no means a major watercourse but drains a reasonable size catchment area and goes on to join the River Mint.  This is generally pretty lumpy countryside to build a railway through!

Take a moment to admire the stone work, the brick arches, and the dated 'tell-tales' checking for cracks widening!  There's also a sign which doesn't refer to the usual vehicle 'bridge strikes' but makes mention of the Beck.  You get a great echo on the road under the arch.  Geohounds will be disappointed to discover that, unfortunately, the beck is fenced off.

The cache is a simple micro vial as that was all that would easily fit.  Should be an easy find and we hope you enjoy visiting this impressive structure.
