Geocache Description:

gosh I so wanted this to be an earthcache, but since it's feature is manmade it does not qualify, so we placed a physical cache there and hope that you will be as amazed as I was!

This is the site of the FIRST transmountain diversion project by the Denver Water Board. (and they came up with the word!) What that means is that in the 1930s, Denver knew it didn't have enough water for it's citizens and started digging this big tunnel underneath the mountain to pull water from Dillon Reservoir to this site. It's like a big straw that sucks water from the west slope to the east side so that Denver can use it.

If you feel so inclined and it's safe to do so, you can walk around and see where the water can come through the tunnel (passing under 285) and turns the South Platte from a tiny trickling stream to a rushing river. Depending on Denver's needs, the water board can turn on or off the "straw".

Extra points awarded to the logs that mention if the water is on or off when you visited!
