[EN] Rainis (born Jānis Pliekšāns) is one of the most important Latvian writers and played a key role in Latvia's fight for cultural autonomy, social justice and independence. He died on 12 September 1929 and was buried here three days later. The cemetery was renamed in his honor. An avenue of silver birch leads to his grave which is marked by a red granite sculpture. Around the monument there is a semi-circular colonnade entwined with ivy.
Alongside Rainis lies his wife, the poet Aspazija (Elza Rozenberg who died in 1943). The cemetery is also the resting place for a great number of Latvian writers, artists and musicians, many of whose graves are decorated with a creativity to match the lives they were designed to commemorate.
