In the Middle Ages this place, on the Chiascio river, was an important crossing of two big roads (Salara-Fabriano and Assisi-Gubbio). It was also for ages the border and -of course- point of contention between Perugia, Assisi and Gubbio. The name of this place is attached to an historical ferryboat, a big wooden vessel, used to cross the Chiascio, now still lying on the bank of the river, restored and protected. In ancient times this place was called: Barcamara. There were also two bridges in the neighbourhood, of which the foundations can be seen. The adjoining building was a sort of hospital for walkers and pilgrims. Take a little walk to the river, it is very beautiful!
