This cache is being placed as a memorial to Borders Books & Music.
I got the idea for what became a series of 16 caches from my wife's former workplace. She was employed at Borders Books & Music in Bridgewater, NJ, from 2002 through 2006. Borders, of course, was one of the United States' two largest brick and mortar bookstores. However, due to overexpansion, bad management, and the surge of Amazon as a book purveyor and e-book leader, Borders was forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The owners were unable to find a buyer for the company, and all its retail locations closed by September 2011.
In order to honor the memory of the good times both she and I had here, I'm placing a series of caches at each of New Jersey's retail locations.
This particular Borders in Princeton - well, West Windsor, really - is the one where I spent the most time. I began coming here in July 2001 to begin playing at the Princeton Scrabble Club, which met at the cafe here until late 2010. It now meets elsewhere, and the store officially closed in January 2011. I can't say I'd visited the site until it came time to scout out where I was going to place this cache, and the exterior hasn't changed very much at all.
