This cache was created to commemorate the marking/blazing of a new trail between Ravenscraig Drive and Purcell's Cove Road/The Frog Pond. Take your time, enjoy the views, and help us keep the trail free of garbage/litter. Enclosed in the cache container are a # of Flag of Nova Scotia lapel pins. Please help yourself to one, and, if possible, leave another lapel pin in exchange. Special "First To Find" Prize!
This is a new trail linking the Ravenscraig trails near the sportsfield to the Purcell's Cove Road at the Frog Pond. Local residents have flagged a proposed route on which a trail walker will encounter forest canopy, geological features, a variety of vegetation and '360 degree' views from the high barrens.
This trail is currently (as of June 2013) being worked on by HRM and will eventually be a wide/groomed trail such you might find elsewhere. It is presently ~50% completed from the Ravenscraig Drive end. It can be challenging as there are rocks and small stumps that one's foot may catch on. There are elevation changes to navigate. The trail is a compressed walking path through low brush and occasional heavy boulders. It is marked ~ every 10 meters by small bits of yellow "caution tape". Some of these markers may be missing when you transit. Plan/look ahead. Not recommended for night/evening transit.
If entering from Ravenscraig Drive, park in the lot near the playground (N 44 37.229 W 063 36.560), follow the path which runs along the hillside of the soccer field. Trail starts @ N 44 37.298 W 063 36.462 at tree with yellow ribbon.
If entering from Purcells Cove Road, park at Frog Pond parking lot on east side of Purcells Cove Road (N 44 37.495 W 063 36.295). Trail starts on west side of Purcells Cove Road (near fire hydrant) at N 44 37.495 W 063 36.325
