The View of the Chinese Cemetery
The Chinese community established this cemetery in the 1880's.
It was intended as a temporary resting place for Chinese laborers who lost their lives working on the railway construction in the area. The belief was that once their families raised enough money the bodies would be returned home. Unfortunately none of the workers at the time made fair wages and what started out as temporary markers became the final resting place for many.
Historical buffs have now added that a few hundred Chinese prospectors from the Tranquille area were also brought here.
This Cemetery is unique in that it complies with the laws of geomancy or sacred geography, of Southern China. Build overlooking the plain and river and facing north. The traditional headstones face the rising sun. It is true Fengshui with the plateau below of a size that can accommodate 12,000 soldiers.
The last burial in the Chinese cemetery took place n the early 1970's.
You need not enter the Cemetery to do this cache. However if you take the time a lot of effort has been made to make this a worthwhile historical place to visit.
