*** Grade I Historic Building ***

“Tsun Yuen Pawnshop”, 晉源押, is on No. 72 Cheung Shing Street, Yuen Long Old Market. The pawn house is still keeping the chinese traditional pawn house architecture.

The pawn house was founded some 200 years ago, probably the first pawnshop in the Yuen Long Old Market. The pawn house has been closed and is not open to the public. But there are eldery people still live here, they are probably are the owner's family members.

Yuen Long Old Market is one of the oldest thriving commercial centres humming with business activities in Hong Kong. Being a distribution centre for farm produce of the villagers in Kam Tin and Ping Shan, the streets in the market were lined with shops of various trades, such as traditional inns and wine shops.

In 1662, the market was relocated to here, as the river to Tai Kiu Tun Hui was silted up. In the beginning of the 20th century, land transport gradually replaced by river channel, as Castle Peak Road was connected to the south of Yuen Long Kau Hui, and the river nearby became increasingly shallow. In 1915, a New Market was established on the opposite side of river bank. The old market remains, but is no longer active.

Another historical building, a old inn 客棧, Tung Yick Inn 同益棧, is 150 meters away. It is was founded some 100 years ago. It is not open for public.

There are two more Grade I historic buildings on Cheung Shing Street, both are temples: Tai Wong Temple 大王古廟 and Yuen Kwan Yi Tai Temple 玄關二帝廟. Don't miss it!
