Skakavac

Surroundings:

The Skakavac waterfall is located in the southwestern part of mountains Ozren, on the northeastern side of Bukovik summit. It was formed on a steep fault section of the left bank of Peracki Brook (Peracki potok). The flow of water varies between 10 and 15 liters per second. It is being reinforced from the spring of the same name, located around 300 meters above the waterfall.
Visiting the waterfall you will find one of the most heterogenic areas in that region with spruce, fir and beech forests with high floral and faunal values, very high level of biodiversity, a high level of endemic and relic plants, funghi and animals with relatively high number of threatened species. Spruces and plants growing on more pronounced slopes create amazing sceneries. Approaching the waterfall you will pass several information tables helping you to distinguish number of endemic flora and fauna.

Geology:

The Skakavac waterfall is one of the most striking geomorphological structures of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Dinaric Alps. It is a truly exceptional natural phenomenon. That space of Dinarides was formed by the peaks of Ozren (1453), Crni Vrh (1503), Crepoljsko (1525) and Bukovik (1532). The terrain in the waterfall zone is made of a variety of rocks of the Triassic, Jurassic-Cretaceous flysch and talus deposits. The following components were isolated in the process of geologic mapping: sandstone, claystone and marl of the Lower Triassic, carbonates of the Anisian and various sediments of the Ladinian, represented by tuff and marl sandstone, claystone, marl, thin layers of cherts and layer limestone with knobs of cherts. The Jurassic-Cretaceous flysch is widespread in the waterfall zone and, in particular, to the east and northwest from it. The talus deposits are isolated in a smaller area, between the spring and the waterfall of Skakavac. The tectonic structure of the terrain is exceptionally complex. The Triassic deposits are folded, affected by fault and horizontally positioned. A syncline was formed between Bukovik and Skakavac and its core contains carbonates, mainly sand-shelf limestone of the Anisian. On the floor there are isolating marl and clay sandstone deposits of Verfen and in the upper layer there are the aforementioned Ladinian deposits of poor water permeability. Consequently, the limestone and dolomites of the Anisian are the main collector and reservoir of groundwaters.

Cache:

To get to cache you are supposed to leave Sarajevo in dirrection to north/north-east passing the Olympic stadium on your left side and proceed to a village Nahorevo. It is possible to get there by a car and allegedly also by a bus. Nearly at the end of Nahorevo (see waypoints & pictures), at a crossroads you will find the information table showing the dirrection to the waterfall. It is approximately 6 km far from the cache and although there is no official parking place it is one of the possible places for leaving your car. Then follow the "main" track leading up to north or north-east, ignoring any secondary tracks leadind down to the river. You can continue driving another 1 km to a spot just before Snake Curves (see waypoints),where asphalt road finishes and where is other possibility to leave the car, but parking places are not so good. If you have a SUV or you are an experienced driver with not very close relationship with your car you can continue driving another 3,5 km to Cottages (see waypoints & pictures) with an information board with a map of the trails in the area. This is the last chance to park your car, because only after a few metres there is a Crossing Barrier (see waypoints) on the road. During and after winter with a lot of snow you will probably have to park your car earlier somewhere on the road. The Waterfall is another 2 km away from the barrier along a forest path marked by red signs and information boards. From the Top view (see waypoints & pictures) you can observe the upper part of the waterfall and the magnificent scenery of surrounding area. To approach the final coordinates you are supposed to continue along the path with red signs to right and down. The terrain is little bit harder there but at the Bottom of the waterfall (see waypoints & pictures) you will fully enjoy the majesty of the waterfall and it is going to make you feel it was worth it.

Logging tasks:

Try to answer following question by your own words:
1. Despite the age of Dinaric Alps, why is their present-day landscape (especially at that area) so rough (with steep jagged escarpments, steep-sided gorges and canyons)?
2.Why has not water of Skakavac had more significant influence (creating some gorge) upon the shape of the rock it is falling from?

Because the given height of the waterfall is different according to various sources (98 m, 80 m or 75 m), try to provide own measurement of it:
3. Find out the elevation of Top view using your GPS device and 4. try to estimate the elevation of upper part of the waterfall.
5. Find out the elevation of Bottom using your GPS device and 6. try to estimate the elevation of lower part of the waterfall.
7. Try to estimate the height of the waterfall.

8. On the Top view there is an information board. Under the roof in the middle there is a red stripe with 3 letters.

To log this cache, write me all those (08) requested answers by e-mail. Pictures of Skakavac with your GPS device attached to your logs will be welcome.

Geologija:

3. Saznajte visinu s vrha pogleda (Top) koristeći GPS uređaj i 4. pokušajte procijeniti visinu od gornjeg dijela slapa-vodopada.
5. Saznajte visinu dna (Bottom) koristeći GPS uređaj i 6. pokušajte procijeniti visinu donjeg dijela vodopada.
7. Pokušajte procijeniti visine vodopada.

8. Na vrhu (Top) je Informativna ploča. Pod krovom u sredini je crvena traka s 3 slova.
