Geocache Description:

There is a culvert here leading water from the canal to the site of the former Kelvin Chemical works.
I believe this was the old Cassel Cyanide Co.

This is the old industrial center of Maryhill. Much of which is now either in decay, transformed or demolished.

In 1882, a George Beilby developed and patented a process for the bulk synthesis of potassium cyanide for use in the gold-extraction industry, by passing ammonia over a heated mixture of charcoal and potassium carbonate. This process helped meet the increased demand for cyanide for use in extracting gold from low-grade ores
Beilby's close association from 1892 with the Glasgow-based Cassel Cyanide Company helped to make him a fortune in this field.
Nearby is the former Bryant and May factory, which produced Scottish Bluebell matches until 1981, and next to this is the formerly Alexander Fergusson's Lead and Colour Works. And further down the canal where the 'Dutch' inspired flats are, was Maryhill's largest industrial undertaking, McLellans Rubber Works, dating from 1876.

A small overgrown inlet on the far bank of the canal here is all that’s left of what once formed a much larger basin serving the Ruchill Saw Mills another type of industry once common in the area

There is still evidence (abutments) that the railway from Maryhill station to Possil which ran in a tunnel under the canal here, and then back into a tunnel going under what is now Ruchill golf course. The tunnels are now filled in.

You'll also be glad to know that the old culvert is gated preventing access under the current industrial estate.

There is an easy way to the cache and a hard way...I'll let you take your pick. Wellies optional but desired.
