I början av 1950-talet blev det tekniskt möjligt att överföra billig vattenkraft från fastlandet till ön. 1954 togs världens första kommersiella kraftöverföring med högspänd likström mellan Västervik och Ygne på Gotland i drift.
Kraftiga oljeprishöjningarna medförde att en ny likströmsöverföring skulle vara ekonomiskt fördelaktig. Överföringen togs i drift 1983 och ytterligare en kabel lades 1987.

In the beginning of the 1950’es it became technical possible to transfer cheap water power from the mainland to the island. In 1954 the world’s first commercial power-transfer with high voltage D.C., between Västervik and Ygne on Gotland started running. Heavy increases on the oil price caused that a new D.C. transfer would be economically profitable. The transfer started in 1983 and another cable was laid in 1987.
