Geocache Description:

This bridge has a very different history. The old approach road was a standard rail level crossing.

There had been many accidents at the level crossing for many years with calls for an improvement to be made to the crossing by the locals. Improvements were made with flashing signals to indicate there is a train approaching.

On 27 Jan 2001 five young men, all aged 19, were travelling from Wagga Wagga to Albury to go to another mate's football match. They approached the intersection of the road and the rail line and impacted with the southbound train travelling at 160 kmh, which resulted in five fatalities.

Eventually the authorities re-designed the crossing resulting in this "Five Mates Crossing" which cost $23 million and was officially opened on 16 December, 2005.

And it also led to the commencement of reforms to the design and management of rail crossings across Australia.

There is a roadside memorial on the south-west side of the bridge with flowers on the fence-line as a reminder of the tragedy.

Ideally the best approach is if you are southbound. There is ample parking on the roadside on the approach to the bridge. There is enough parking for a caravan, RV or truck too. If approaching while northbound, you can park on either side of the road, but beware of the traffic.

There is always traffic on this road, so please take extreme care while locating and logging the cache for the safety of all.

The cache is a small magnetic sistema container with log book and pencil. Take care to return it to its location, do not push it too far in or it may be difficult to retrieve.

Logging Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go to a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.
