This cache is hidden in Jubilee Park.
The development of "Tomlinson's Paddock" (Jubilee Park) began in 1887 when Queen Victoria's Jubilee was celebrated by the planting of trees of the British Empire. The area had been leased for grazing and the lessee offered to give up his lease for the Jubilee project.
The purpose of the planting of the area was to create a garden representing the flora of the British Empire. An oak tree was planted by the Mayor RH Leary to mark the Jubilee, and further planting was undertaken.
In 1954 a young Queen Elizabeth continued the royal association with Jubilee Park by planting more trees in the area.
The oak walk within Jubilee Park is of botanical and historical value to the city and is worthy of preservation and protection. The area is designated as a walking area only to protect the trees' root systems from compaction and to allow the Dunedin Amenities Society and DCC to replant the area in bulbs and other plants.
To help the community in this protection all mountain bikers are asked not to ride in this area and to keep on the marked routes within Jubilee Park. It is a fun, safe and easy circuit (but still challenging) for parents, children and seasoned riders alike.
