Geocache Description:

Cache hiding in the reserve behind a hotel venue near the area occupied by a circus each year.

Container: 200ml sistema container with black coating and blue clips. Contains visitor log and small treasures that you may swap. History of location: We have placed a cache in this area to share some history of a venue that was a significant place in Vermont South in its former days. The hotel, named from it's location at the corner of Burwood Hwy and Springvale Rd, is a key landmark in Vermont South (although behind "Ramsay Street" from TV show Neighbours in popularity with tourists). Built in 1968, the hotel was part of a new era of pubs being one of several large suburban beer barns in Melbourne. Every weekend during the 70s and 80s live music attracted many flannelette shirt and stubbie shorts wearing patrons (the favored attire is relatively unchanged today). AC/DC performed live at the hotel in December 1975. Whilst the venue has never been known as a gentle drinking establishment, with fights the norm from Thurs- Sat nights. Only 10 years ago, the reserve behind the venue was covered in trees but they were all cleared away to make the site less appealing to the drug absusers inhabiting that area. The hotel featured in scenes on 70s and 80s TV show Prisoner. Most people are likely unaware of the size of the vacant land behind. Whilst the site is currently is largely vacant, recent council planning proposals suggest the site could be used for community oriented upgrades. Seeing how other local vacant lands are quickly filled with houses, like the old Channel 10 land, and this area is zoned as residential, it is certainly unlikely to be vacant in years to come. **Congratulations Cracka1 & S4phhire on FTF, followed closely by Ali J, all within hours of cache published!**
