Fauxbow Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Located by a bend in Rock Creek, this cache is somewhat sheltered from Beach Drive. It is only a short distance from the paved trail and the terrain is moderate, but in summer months some navigation of underbrush is required.
Named for what may eventually become an oxbow – but for now is just a fauxbow – this cache takes you to a secluded spot only a few minutes off of the hiker/biker trail, and is peaceful except for the Beltway noise!
The cache is a small 3.5"x5" plastic container. In November of 2018, we had to move the cache about 150 feet away because a downed tree destroyed the old hiding spot (and the coordinates above show the current location). We are pretty confident of the coordinates, which are based on averaging eight separate readings with two different GPS devices – but please let us know in comments if you think they are off. The best parking is an area on Beach Drive just west of Connecticut Avenue (waypoint Parking 1 below).
The difficulty and terrain ratings are based on the underbrush in the spring and summer. During the winter, this cache will be easier to reach. Don’t try this cache right after heavy Rock Creek flooding.
It is a small container, but we’ve been able to squeeze in a few fun trinkets for the kids. We have left TWO “first to find” prizes: for grown-ups, one unactivated Travel Bug, and a special prize for kids! If you do NOT have kids in your group, please leave the kid-focused FTF for the first group with kids. November 2018 edit: The FTFs are long gone, but we have added a couple of fun things for kids (plus a trackable).
Have fun! And if you find the cache, please be sure to hide to back as you found it.
