Geocache Description:

ENG: Cache on hill of historical value with ancient fort and other historical remains.
SWE: Kulle av historiskt värde med fornborg och andra fornlämningar.

ENG: On Galgberget outside Gödestad is an ancient fort from sometime between the Stone Age and the Iron Age. At that time was the ground level significantly lower and the low-lying areas around Galgberget was sea or swamp. These then dried up due to uplift and the marshes were drained to Himleån. The ancient castle has served as protection for a trade center until Varberg Fortress was built in the 1300s.

Outside the ancient castle was a gallow used for executions. The sentenced was given the option to instead of hanging jump down the cliff "ättestupet". By the mid 1300s Count Jacob of Halland had Kjeld Boat arrested since he had been complaining about the Count's violence against the public. This however angered the common people and they caught the Count's assistant Arfvid Bengtsson and his 10 companions when they were on one of his usual rambles of extortion by the peasantry of Himle, Faurås and Viske counties. Then they were hanged on the gallows.

The heritage sites in the area are managed on voluntary basis by Gödestads Folklore Society.

SWE: På Galgberget utanför Gödestad finns en gammal fornborg från någongång mellan stenålder till järnålder. På den tiden låg marknivån betydligt lägre och de låglänta områdena runt Galgberget var hav eller sumpmark. Dessa torkade sedan upp pga landshöjning samt att sumpmarken dikades ut till Himleån. Fornborgen har fungerat som skydd för handelscentrum tills dess att Varbergs fästning byggdes på 1300-talet.

Utanför fornborgen låg galgen som användes för avrättningar. De dömda erbjöds alternativet att istället för hängning hoppa ner för ättestupet. Vid mitten på 1300-talet lät greve Jacob av Halland häkta Kjeld Båt för att denna beklagat sig över grevens våld mot allmänheten. Detta retade dock upp allmogen som fångade grevens medhjälpare Arfvid Bengtsson och hans 10 följeslagare när de befann sig på ett av sina vanliga strövtåg för utpressning av allmogen i Himle, Faurås och Viske härader. Därefter hängdes de i galgen.

Områdets fornlämningar sköts ideellt av Gödestads Hembygdsförening.
