The tear drop, also called a runner or a floater, is usually performed by undersized players (mainly point guards). A player usually starts the layup procedure a good distance away from the basket. It is so-named because the ball drops down from the high point of the arc like a falling tear drop - though I believe that it's named that because it makes the big men who miss the block cry like babies. In reality, the shot is quick and highly accurate, though it may not look it.
The tear drop is the go to move for NBA guards like Derrick Rose, Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo and Tony Parker.

This cache is ALSO named "The Tear Drop" after someone who took a pretty bad tumble as I was hiding the cache. Please, note the presence of the wire fence, watch your step and be sure to step OVER the wire and not THROUGH the wire, which might be hidden by flora at about ankle height - we don't want anyone to hurt themselves here.
Bring on the opposition
Cause my position is to shut you down
As the basketball pounds on the concrete floor
Envisioning moves to freak brothers every which way
Dominating like Doc J.
Pass me the rock, I know just what to do with it
It's real vivid, I pivot, through the lane
Three hundred and sixty behind my back
I take your monkey ass to the rack like Jerry Stack
