Hout Bay Golf Links. Opened in 1922

In 1921 a group of business men conceived the idea of a Hout Bay golf club which, while conforming to the accepted rules of other established golf clubs on the Peninsula, would allow a more enthusiastic expression of their enjoyment of the game of golf and subsequent relaxation in a clubhouse.

On 10 July 1921 the Hout Bay Golf Club was officially founded and constituted under the presidency of PC Sandell. The Vice-President was Walter F Long who, as a director of the City Tramway Company, was largely instrumental in negotiating the lease of an area on the grounds of the hotel as a club, and suitable land adjoining the hotel for the golf links. The first nine holes were laid out and the first organised competition took place on 29 September 1921.

In late 1937 the Hout Bay Hotel was sold to Mr Collingridge. The land on which the course was located was retained by Peninsula Excursions and the club negotiated a new lease undertaking to pay the owners “25% of any net profit yearly.

By 1940 any younger members of the club had joined the Armed Forces, including the club professional. The club had to hand over to the Army part of the land comprising the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th fairways and greens and they had to close down the bar and lounge facilities. Members attending the monthly competitions were accommodated for lunch by the hotel and change room facilities were provided. The liquor laws did not allow the consumption of alcohol by non-residents on a Sunday and this restriction led to difficulties with the owners. Fortunately Don Stewart offered his home which was situated above the second green to those attending the monthly compete-tions in order that the customary conviviality was not allowed to disappear.
With the departure of Mr Collingridge in 1948 the club was faced with the new owners, Mrs. Sheperd and Mrs. Holmes. They had acquired the land from Peninsula Excursions, and both parties became involved in long discussions regarding compensation for rent and other costs.
Rumours were prevalent that the ladies were negotiating the sale of the land on which the fifth, sixth, seventh and eight holes were located but, despite strong denials, they were reluctant to give any assurances or undertaking regarding play on the course for the year 1949. As a result of this impasse and also because the club was unable to renew the lease of the land requisitioned by the Army in 1940, the Committee began investigating a new location for the club.

An offer of amalgamation with the Somerset West Golf Club or permanent courtesy of its course was rejected on the grounds of distance from Cape Town.

A tentative effort by the honorary secretary of the time to interest members in his brainchild of a country club near Milnerton received scant support and was soon forgotten.

A hard core of members were reluctant to see the Club perish and in 1949 the decision to go “nomadic” was taken. In the ensuing years a succession of energetic secretaries whipped up enthusiasm among the members and the Club took on a new lease of life. The courtesy of the course was, when requested, granted by the following Golf Clubs: Mowbray, Rondebosch, West¬lake, Hermanus, Paarl, Royal Cape, Stellenbosch, Strand, Milnerton and Clovelly. For various reasons the facilities of some of these clubs are no longer available but the club still enjoys the facilities of most of these clubs.

Since 1949 the Hout Bay Golf Club has existed, with fluctuating success, as a golf club without a golf course.

While the golf has all but disappeared the hotel remains
