Geocache Description:

Former Hapeville Ford Assembly Plant

April is Earth Month. To celebrate, we are placing caches at several formerly environmentally contaminated sites around Atlanta. These abandoned sites, known as brownfields, once contained harmful levels of chemicals. Once these site are remediated, they have the potential to be reused in beneficial ways.

For this cache, we look toward the future.

The Hapeville-Atlanta Assembly Plant opened in 1947 and built many car models including the Ford Fairlane, Fairmont, Falcon, Galaxie, Grananda, LTD, Rachero, Torino, Thunderbird, Marquis, Sable and Taurus. It closed in October 2006.

Jacoby Development (developer of Atlantic Station) purchased the site for $40 million in June 2008. The environmental cleanup, including removal of asbestos, petroleum, and unused paint buried in a pit, cost about $5 million.

Original plans were to develop the site into an "Aerotropolis" -- an aviation-intensive business district with offices, retail shops, restaurants, hotels and airport parking. While the Recession has delayed implementation, Posche North America plans to start work soon.
