Micro Tube cache hidden in a camo bag. Paths are slippery in wet weather.
This cache has been replaced twice due to being muggled by nearby campers, so please replace and cover adequately.
The reason for choosing this location is that as a young girl I clearly remember my Dad carrying to the top of the woods a very heavy wooden sledge with wooden runners that he had used bees wax on to make them highly polished, my sister and I were allowed to slide down on the sledge as long as we pulled it up behind us afterwards, however being small my Dad always came down to pull the sledge and us up to the top. That was 58 years ago. What fun we had.
Roughhill Wood in which this cache is hidden is adjacent toColwick Woods which is one of the city's hidden-gems. This 50-hectare site of rich grassland and ancient woodland provides an oasis of tranquillity just one mile from the bustle of the City.
A small section of Colwick Woods, about half a mile east of this cache, was designated as a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1995 and Colwick Woods were listed as a Local Nature Reserve in 2004. This site is particularly suitable for walking, with a number of well maintained public rights of way paths spanning the woods. Roughhill Wood also offers a panoramic view of the Trent Valley - as far as Belvoir Castle - and across the City, just 70 metres north of the cache site.
The diverse ancient woodlands are characterised by ash, elm, oak, field maple and beech, with dog's mercury and ivy dominating the ground flora it is home to many beetles, including a rare leaf beetle. Colwick Woods is also rich in mammal species including the pipistrelle and noctule bats.
Historians believe that this site has been woodland since the early 1600's, possibly longer but is typical of those found along the steep land bounding the Trent Flood Plain in parts of the site. In addition parts of the woodland have also been closely associated with Colwick Hall as identified by an old Ice House found on the site.
