I Survived The 1.5 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

bellydancer08: The city has removed the link to the web page the puzzle was based on, so information is no longer readily available. The earthquake is old news; it's time for this one to be retired.

Container will remain in place for a few months in case anyone had solved but not searched yet.

Geocache Description:

Our quiet little town of Clintonville made national news last month as we experienced bizarre shaking and booming phenomena. The U.S. Geological Survey determined that these were the result of a 1.5 magnitude earthquake, which was part of a “swarm of small quakes” that rattled our town for several days. While earthquakes that size are rarely even felt in other parts of the country, the rock composition of this area made the experience truly unnerving and frightening for those who heard the explosion-like booms and were awakened by rattling windows and houses shaking.

The posted coordinates take you to the geographic center of all reported shaking incidents. It’s in the middle of a street, so the container is not there. To find the cache, you’ll need to explore the earthquake information at the Clintonville city website: (visit link) All the necessary information can be found on either the Booming Sounds Map (hint: use Layers to include or exclude data) or the March 22nd presentation by city administrator Lisa Kuss.

The cache is at: N 44 3B.OOM W 088 SH.AKE

B: Count the number of reported shaking incidents from 3/22/12 – 3/24/12. (Easiest if you use the Layers tool to uncheck all the other dates.)
B = that number divided by 4 (round to whole number)

O: Early on March 22nd, the USGS was able to gather additional data from our area from
__ portable stations to give them a total of eight stations to analyze information from.
O = half of the number of portable stations

O: the other half of the number of portable stations

M: The audio recording of a ‘boom’ was recorded at 65 E. ___ Street.
M = subtract one digit from the other

S: The magnitude of earthquakes that sometimes result in things like cracked windows.

H: The depth (in km) assigned to the earthquake at 12:16 a.m. on March 20th.

A: Two stations make it difficult for the USGS to determine locations if there was possible earth movement activity, as the most common results come from a use of at least ___ stations.

K: Use the map to show the reported shaking incidents from 3/19/12-3/21/12. Find the report that is farthest to the north east. The caller reported “Booms @ 1:KE A.M.”

E: see clue for K
