Geocache Description:

An easy cache in memory of a great Australian!

St Joseph's School began in 1870 in an architecturally designed stone building which served as both a church and school. Mary MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods at Penola had only established the religious order, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart four years earlier. The sisters from this order pioneered the school. It had been in operation for only a year when it was suddenly closed because of the excommunication of Mary MacKillop. In March 1872 the excommunication was lifted and the school was reopened.

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. When she was in Penola she met Julian Tenison Woods and together they opened the first St Joseph's School in 1866.
Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph, who have established schools all over Australia and New Zealand as well as other institutions to help the poor.

Mary MacKilop's famous saying was "Never see a need without doing something about it"
Well..... there was a need, a geochache in her honour, and something has been done about it!
This is one of many caches placed in significant locations of her story.

Mary died on August 8th, 1909.

She was declared Australia’s first Saint in 2012.

Avoid school hours as it tends to be very busy.
