Geocache Description:

The Fort Devens Cemetery is located on Patton Road, Devens, MA. Take exit 37 off Rte 2 (Jackson Rd), turn right on Patton. The cache is located in Devens community. This cache is designed to give a taste of rich Massachusetts military history. It is a coin drop so bring challenge coins or foreign money to trade. FTF a custom Clever Monkey coin (limited edition).

In 1917, Camp Devens was established. In 1931, through the efforts of U.S. Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers, Camp Devens became Fort Devens, a permanent U.S. Army post and the military center for New England. Military use of the land included: a summer training camp for New England National Guard troops, a Civilian Military Training Camp, a detention center for WWII German and Italian POWs and a test site for early rocket scientist Robert Goddard.

Buried here are soldiers and their families from six of America’s wars. Thirty graves have been transferred from the original Camp Devens cemetery; 97 graves have been transferred from several fort cemeteries in Boston Harbor. The cemetery also contains the graves of the many servicemen and their children who were victims of the influenza epidemic of 1917-1919, when 14,000 were stricken. The most recent grave, a military spouse, was buried here in 2010.

During 1944 to 1946, 5,000 WWII POW's from Germany and Italy were brought to Fort Devens. There are 20 German and two Italian military members buried here who died in captivity.

Fort Devens formally closed in 1996 but still remains a small active Reserve and National Guard post including U.S. Army Reserve, Massachusetts National Guard and USMC Reserve units.
