Quercus virginiana, also known as the southern live oak, or more commonly in Florida as live oak, is common from southeast Virginia to Florida. It is typically evergreen; bark is dark, thick and furrowed longitudinally; the branches project at amazing angles to make a tree with wonderful character. The acorns are small but serve as an important food source for many animals and birds. The wood is hard, very strong and was the preferred source of framework timber for wooden ships. The frame of the USS Constitution was constructed of live oak wood, allowing it to survive cannon ball fire and earning it the nickname “Old Ironsides”. The largest live oak in Florida is the Cellon Oak in Alachua County, with a circumference of 30 feet and a height of 85 feet. The sandy soil along parts of the trails on Cayo Costa supports the growth of many large live oaks. Look for a group of three of them that will mark the site of this cache. It is a small loc-n-loc container. You will need your own pen. Please replace it carefully as you found it to preserve the hide for the next geocacher.
