Denna tätort har inte alltid varit klassad som tätort. Mellan åren 1990-2010 var befolkningsmängden så låg i samhället att det inte klassades som tätort. Men idag kan Örtofta återigen kalla sig för tätort, då befolkningsmängden idag överstiger gränsvärdet (200 invånare) för att kallas för just tätort.

Samhället i sig har inte så mycket att erbjuda, men här finns iaf en pågatågstation och dessutom Sveriges enda kvarvarande sockerbruk som är i drift. Mer info om sockerbruket hittar du i cachen "Sugardaddy" som inte ligger så långt härifrån.
