One of a series of caches that commemorate historical industrial activities on the Isle of Arran. Each cache contains information that you will need to find the bonus cache "Arran Industry – Quarry". This cache container is a 350ml tub hidden close to the abandoned settlement of Clauchan.
In the 18th & early 19th centuries Arran was well known for the quality of its whisky, which was refered to on the mainland as "Arran Water". A series of poor harvests in the early 1800s led to the active suppression of illegal stills of which there over 50 on the island; barley was needed to feed the population. There were also 3 legal distilleries on the island: behind the Lagg Hotel, at Shiskine and a third whose location is unknown. By the 1840s all three distilleries had closed and most of the illegals stills destroyed. As a Highland area the industry was hampered by the laws which favoured larger Lowland distilleries and limited the size of stills in the Highlands. In 1995 a new distillery was built at Loch Ranza in the north of the island but this cache commemorates the small scale industry that took place in hidden glens like Clauchan and died out over 160 years ago. The cache is hidden at: N 31° 31.ABC W005° 17.DEF To find the cache you will first need to find the following information from the information boards within recently restored Clauchan (or Saint Molios) chapel 1. Shiskine Valley Sports day raised £AB4D 2. Molios was sent by the abbey in about 1E57 3.
