In 1892, industrialist, Émile Stehelin of Normandy, France, sent his son Jean Jacques to Church Point, to find a new business venture for the family.
Forestry and lumber were the most promising. The family purchased 4000 hectares of mostly forest, and the New France settlement, also know as "Electric City" was established. A pole railway was built to carry lumber, people and provisions to and from New France and Weymouth. The New France settlement was a place way ahead of it`s time. Not only did it have a railway, but also the electric lights of New France shined brightly 30 years before any other community of the area had electricity.
