Geodoggie’s Crusade!
This 450ml clip-lid cache has been hidden on Geodoggie’s favourite walk through Salehurst and Robertsbridge. The cache can be found along a circular walk that takes you from the High Street of Robertsbridge, along Fair Lane, over the A21 bridge, and through to Salehurst.
You will pass two pubs on your way, both are well worth visiting. You will also pass St Mary’s the Virgin Church, which contains a baptismal font that was reputedly brought back from the Crusades by King Richard the Lionheart. The Church also contains some of the oldest stained glass windows in the country. This walk is suitable for children and other Geodoggies, but it can become quite muddy. Geodoggie recommends you bring a picnic and enjoy it by the river! Parking is available in Robertsbridge on the High Street, or in Salehurst along Church Lane.
Please help Geodoggie on his crusade! Geodoggie wants as many people as possible to take a photo of themselves wearing his badge. So, please attach the badge, take a photo, and include your photo when you log your visit to this cache. Geodoggie will be forever grateful for your help in his crusade! Please do not remove Geodoggie’s badge. He is very possessive of such things. Thank you!
Background Information:
In historic terms, Salehurst is much older than Robertsbridge; before the bridge over the River Rother was built it already existed, and it is named in the Domesday Book. At the time the river crossing was by ford or ferry, but in the 12th century a newly-established order of Cistercian monks constructed the bridge, and the two settlements of Robertsbridge and Northbridge Street came into being. Salehurst lies approximately three miles from Bodiam, Sussex, site of Bodiam Castle. One owner of Bodiam Castle was the Levett family, who lived at Salehurst during their 'occupation' of the castle. In 1588 John Levett of Salehurst contributed to the Armada loan, and in 1607 his sons John and Thomas of Salehurst were re-granted by the College of Arms their right to the Levett coat of arms issued to their Sussex ancestors.
