Geocache Description:

A traditional cache, with the prospect of spectacular views across Croyde Bay and Saunton Sands.

The third in our series of caches inspired by our faithful Chesapeake Bay Retriever dog, Chester. We hope to expand this series further in summer 2012.

The cache is placed near the top of Saunton Down, and can be approached from either Saunton or Croyde by a variety of public footpaths. If attempting the cache from the Croyde side, it is well worth progressing the extra 50 metres or so to the top of the hill, as the view from the summit is breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see Dartmoor tors to the South, Exmoor to the East, Lundy Island to the North and Hartland Point to the West.

The footpath to Croyde will be muddy in wet weather, and from either start point, the climb to the top of the hill is quite a challenge, reflected in the terrain rating. I wouldn't try to take a buggy or a push bike up the hill (although the descent into Croyde would be great fun on a mountain bike!). An active child of six or seven would be able to make it to the top with minimal whinging. There is livestock in the fields on the Saunton side and there are two stiles, one each side of the cache, that are not overly dog-friendly, but most dogs will be able to squeeze through or round them. Chester is a bit of a wimp where stiles are concerned, but he managed them both.

****Congratulations Pendragon of Bedwas for first to find****
